How Hail Damage Can Effect Your Roof

If you live in Texas, you’re already familiar with hailstorms. In fact, you may have had a car damaged by one, a window, maybe even a boat or motorcycle. But have you ever considered what it could be doing to your roof?

Hail can cause major roof damage that is sometimes undetectable without a professional inspection. We’ve put together a list that will help you know what to look for after a hailstorm occurs.

Metal roofs: You’ll want to look for small indentations or “dents”. Depending on the size of the hail, this type of damage should be easy to identify.

Asphalt: Look for missing pieces within the asphalt. You’ll see areas on the shingle that have exposed, black substrate. The granules of the asphalt will have been damaged or knocked off.

Shingles: The first thing you’ll notice is bruising in the shingles. Dents from hail will not always be visible so if you simply run your hand or a cloth over them you can feel small dimples on the surface. While pressing on it, if you feel movement, this is a clear sign that the shingles have already begun deteriorating. If the shingles are cracked, this is a clear sign of hail damage and needs to be addressed immediately.

Wood Roofs: When hailstorms impact a wood surface the marks left over will be gray or discolored. This is where surface has been removed from the hail. Hail damage to wood roofs that don’t split or puncture the wood in any way are not as damaging.

Gutters: If the gutters of your home were clean before the storm then you may easily notice that they will be full of granules and debris, which is a clear sign that the there has been roof wear and tear caused by the hail.

How to Prepare Your Home for Spring and Hail Season

We all know the saying “April showers bring May flowers,” but sometimes it can also bring unexpected hailstorms, and in Texas, even unexpected heat waves!

It’s important to make sure that your home roof and exterior are as prepared as possible for inclement weather so we’ve put together a simple list of steps you can take to assure that your home will be the last one standing.

Get an Inspection Early in the Season

You may not be aware of damages that have already taken place on your existing roof so it’s important to assess that early on before they further damage occurs. Repair or replace missing, cracked, or worn shingles. And if a replacement is in order it’s better to replace it now before the situation worsens. You can book an inspection here on our homepage.

Know your Insurance policy

Does your insurance cover roof damage? Now is a god time to find out as much detail as possible. Most insurance carriers and policies will cover the cost of repairs for hail damage, if yours does not consider switching providers as soon as possible. It’s also possible that could have a higher deductible for hail or wind damage than other weather related claims so be sure to research that as well.

Trim Back Trees

The trees surrounding your home can be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. It’s important to properly landscape and monitor your tree growth. Cutting or trimming branches near your roof to can significantly reduce the risk of damage to your home’s exterior.
